TENDERTOES ACADEMYLesson Plan: Addition on a Number Line
Grade Level: 1
Topic: Adding Using a Number Line
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Understand what a number line is
Add numbers by moving forward on a number line
Solve simple addition problems up to 20
Materials Needed
whiteboard
Marker
Introduction
Draw a number line on the board (0 to 20)
Ask students:
“What numbers do you see?”
“Which number comes after 5?”
Explain:
A number line helps us count forward and backward
When we add, we move forward (to the right)
Teaching
Step 1: Demonstration
1. Example: 3 + 2
Start at 3 on the number line
Move 2 steps forward (4, 5)
Land on 5
So, 3 + 2 = 5
2. Example: 4 + 3
Start at 4
Jump 3 steps → 5, 6, 7
Answer: 7
3. Example: 20 + 3=
Start at 20
Jump 3 steps→ 21, 22, 23
Answer: 23
4. Example: 20 + 5=
Start at 20
Jump 5 steps→ 21, 22, 23, 24, 25
Answer: 25
Step 2. Adding three numbers
We can add together more than 2 numbers at same time. In this unit we are going to add to 10 and above using a number line.
1. 10 + 2 + 3
Start at 10 → jump 2 → 12 → jump 3 → 15
Answer: 15
2. 13 + 3 + 3
Start at 13 → jump 3 → 16 → jump 3 → 19
Answer: 19
3. 12 + 2 + 3
Start at 12 → jump 2 → 14 → jump 3 → 17
Answer: 17
Conclusion
Review: Start → Jump → Land
Emphasize: Addition means moving forward
