Lesson Note: Exploring Plants

Objectives:

1. Identify the common features of plants.
2. Classify plants into groups based on their features.
3. Provide examples of plants in each group.

Introduction (10 minutes):

Hello, students! Today, we're going on an exciting journey to explore the fascinating world of plants. Can anyone tell me what comes to mind when they hear the word "plant"? (Allow students to share their thoughts and ideas).

 CONTENT

 Plants are living things that grow in the ground and make their own food from sunlight, water, and air.  Some common features of plants:

• Roots: absorb water and nutrients from the soil
• Stems: support the plant and transport water and nutrients
• Leaves: make food for the plant through photosynthesis
• Flowers: produce seeds for the plant to reproduce

Classification of plants into groups based on their features. We can group plants into:

1. Flowering Plants (e.g., roses, sunflowers, tomatoes)
   • These plants produce flowers and seeds.
2. Non-Flowering Plants (e.g., ferns, mosses, conifers)
   • These plants do not produce flowers or seeds.
3. Herbs (e.g., basil, mint, cilantro)
   • These plants are small, non-woody, and often used for cooking or medicine.
4. Shrubs (e.g., lavender, rosemary, hibiscus)
   • These plants are small to medium-sized and have woody stems.
5. Trees (e.g., oak, pine, mango)
   • These plants are tall, have woody stems, and often produce fruit or seeds.

Guided Practice 

Let's work together to match some plants with their corresponding groups. I'll show you some pictures of plants, and you tell me which group you think they belong to.

• Picture 1: A sunflower
• Picture 2: A fern
• Picture 3: A basil plant
• Picture 4: A lavender shrub
• Picture 5: A mango tree

Assessment:

• Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding.

• Review their handouts with classified plants for accuracy.
