Lesson Outline:
1. Introduction
Ask: “Have you ever seen food go bad at home?”
Explain:
“Food can get spoiled if we don’t store it properly. We use food preservation to keep it safe and healthy.”
2. Food Preservation
Explain simply:
What is food preservation?
“Food preservation means keeping food fresh so it lasts longer and doesn’t make us sick.”
Examples of preservation:
Refrigeration – Keep milk, fruits, and vegetables in the fridge.
Freezing – Freeze ice cream or meat.
Canning/Jars – Store jams or pickles.
Drying – Make dried fruits or chips.
Activity: Show pictures of fresh vs spoiled food and discuss which is safe to eat.
3. Harmful Substances
Explain in simple words:
“Some foods have harmful substances that can make us sick.”
Examples:
Too much sugar or salt – Can harm teeth and body.
Spoiled or rotten food – Can cause stomach pain.
Chemicals in junk food – Some candies, chips, or fizzy drinks have chemicals that are bad for health.
Tip: “Always eat clean, fresh, and healthy food.”
Activity
Give students flashcards of foods.
Ask them to classify them into safe/unsafe food.
Example: Fresh apple → safe; old leftover sandwich → unsafe.
Conclusion
