Introduction
Clap your hands in a steady pattern (e.g., clap–clap–pause–clap).
Ask pupils to repeat after you.
Ask:
What did we just do?
Did we clap fast or slow?
Explain that the pattern of sound we made is called rhythm.
Presentation
1. Meaning of Rhythm
Rhythm is the pattern of sounds—long and short, fast and slow—in music.
Example:
Clap – Clap – Pause – Clap
2. Meaning of Movement
Movement means using our body (hands, legs, head) to follow music or rhythm.
Examples of movement:
Clapping
Stamping feet
Nodding head
Dancing
3. Demonstration
Beat a drum steadily.
Let pupils march to the beat.
Change to a faster beat and let them move faster.
Slow the beat and let them move slowly.
You may use a simple drum or a traditional drum such as the Talking drum to demonstrate rhythm.
Activity 1: Move to the Beat
Slow beat → Walk slowly
Fast beat → March fast
Stop beat → Freeze
