TENDERTOES ACADEMYLESSON PLAN: INTRODUCTION TO FRACTIONS (GRADE 2)
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 3/4, 2/5, 5/6, 7/10)
Age Group: Grade 2 (6–7 years)
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
Understand that a fraction shows equal parts of a whole
Identify simple fractions: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4
Recognize and name other fractions: 3/4, 2/5, 5/6, 7/10
Shade or show fractions using shapes or objects
Relate fractions to real-life examples (food, objects, sharing)
Previous Knowledge
Learners should already know:
Counting numbers
Basic shapes (circle, square, rectangle)
Simple sharing (halving objects)
Teaching Materials
Paper circles and squares (cut-outs)
Colored pencils/crayons
Introduction
Teacher:
Shows a whole apple or draws a circle
Cuts it into equal parts
Asks:
“If I share this with one friend, how many parts do we get?”
Explain:
A fraction means “equal parts of a whole”
Teaching Steps
Step 1: Simple Fractions
Teach using drawings and objects:
1/2 (one-half): 1 out of 2 equal parts
Example: half a bread
1/3 (one-third): 1 out of 3 equal parts
Example: 1 slice of 3 pizza slices
1/4 (one-quarter): 1 out of 4 equal parts
Example: 1 piece of a chocolate bar divided into 4
Step 2: Other Fractions
3/4: 3 out of 4 parts shaded
2/5: 2 out of 5 equal parts
5/6: 5 out of 6 parts
7/10: 7 out of 10 parts
Use shading activities to show each fraction on shapes.
Activities (Guided Practice)
Activity 1: Shade It
Give students shapes to shade:
Shade 1/2 of a circle
Shade 1/4 of a square
Shade 3/4 of a rectangle
Evaluation (Assessment Questions)
Ask:
1. What is a fraction?
2. Shade 1/2 of this shape
3. How many parts make 3/4?
4. Which is bigger: 1/2 or 1/4?
5. Show 2/5 using drawing
Conclusion
Review all fractions
Reinforce idea: “Fractions are equal parts of a whole".
Homework
Draw a circle and show:
1/2 shaded
1/4 shaded
3/4 shaded
