Sharon Stars International SchoolMEANING OF PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN / ART The principles of design are the rules which guide the use of elements of design to produce a work of art. Such rules incude balance, emphases narmony, rhythm, proportion, variety, contrast and repetition. They are rules or laws of organizing the elements of art to produce a good work of or design. .
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN The principles of design or art which include balance, emphasis or dominance, hamony, rhythm, proportion, variety, contrast and repetition 1. Balance: Balance is a principle of art or design. It suggests the use of colour, form, line, shape, etc, in such an arangement in a work of art so that the work appears stable, steady and restful when looked at. It is the principle of achieving visual equilibrium (visually equal effect of weight) art due to the right placements of the elements of design or art. Therefore, visual equality in any art work is also called"balance". balanced work of at gives a feeling of stability and unity. It is one of the factors responsible for unity in design or work of art. 2.Emphasis Or Dominance:
This is the principle of art that shows some motifs bigger than others in the same desiIgn. It makes some parts of an artwork a centre of interest or attention. This also means that the central theme in a desian is emphasized while the other minor areas are de-emphasized 3. HARMONY: HARMONY is one of the principles of design. This simply refers to the appearance of order and agreement in the relationship of all the elements of design present in a design or work of art. 4 RHYTHM: RHYTHM is that principle of design which creates visual movements in a work of art as a result of regular repeated use of an element or elements of design. For instance, elements of design are placed in a repeated manner so as to achieve hamony in a work of art. 5.PROPORTION is the ule concemed with the relation of one Part of a wok to another or to the whole work, in order to achieve some degree of balance and hamony. It is also the proper disirnibutiorn and relationship of various elements in a design. 6. REPETITION: Repetition is the process of allowing some art elements to occur several times on a design. It is a continuous replacement of a particular motif or any element of design in an artwork to fom a good design. Good repettion of elements of art in a design ensures hamony and unity. It connects parts of the design and binds them together. There is a strong relationship between repetition and rhythm. However, rhythm is the result of repetition. 7 VARIETY: This is the use of the elements of art Such as shapes, motifs, line, texture, etc in varied and organized manner thereby making the design or art work more interesting and appealing. If one element or motif is used in the production of a design it will look uninteresting, but if variety of elements of designs are used, a good design is produced. This is because monotony klls interest, but variety they say is the spice of life.
