UNIQUE FRIENDS SCHOOLSTo understand how the British conquered Nigerian territories, it's essential to consider the methods they employed. Two significant ways the British exerted their control were through the signing of treaties and the waging of wars.
Signing of Treaties: The British used treaties as a means to gain control over various Nigerian territories. These treaties, often presented as agreements of friendship and trade, were usually skewed in favor of the British. Local rulers, unaware of the full implications of these treaties or feeling pressured, would sign them, thereby ceding control of their territories to the British. The British would then use these treaties as legal justification for their occupation and administration of the areas.
Waging of Wars: When treaties were not effective or when local resistance was met, the British resorted to waging wars against Nigerian kingdoms and empires. The British had superior weaponry and military organization, which gave them a significant advantage over the local forces. Through a series of conquests and battles, the British were able to defeat many Nigerian states, incorporating them into the British Empire. Notable examples include the conquest of the Sokoto Caliphate and the defeat of other resistant states through military campaigns.
Both the signing of treaties and the waging of wars were crucial strategies the British used to conquer and consolidate their control over Nigerian territories. These methods allowed the British to expand their empire, impose their administration, and eventually, merge the various conquered territories into what is known today as Nigeria.
