Introduction:
The past tense is used to talk about actions that happened in the past. However, when we want to show that one action happened before another action in the past, we use the past perfect tense. The past perfect tense is formed using the auxiliary verb "had" + the past participle of the main verb.
Explanation of Past Perfect Tense and Past Tense:
The past tense is used to describe an action that occurred in the past, whereas the past perfect tense is used to describe an action that occurred before another action in the past. The main difference between the two tenses is the timing of the actions. The past perfect tense is used to show that one action was completed before another action started.
Examples of Past Perfect Tense:
- I had eaten breakfast before I went to school.
- She had finished her homework before she watched TV.
- They had traveled to many countries before they settled in Africa.
- He had studied English before he moved to the United States.
- We had played football before it started raining.
Converting Past Tense to Past Perfect Tense:
To convert the past tense to the past perfect tense, we add the auxiliary verb "had" before the past participle of the main verb.
Examples:
- Past tense: I walked to school. -> Past perfect tense: I had walked to school.
- Past tense: She wrote a letter. -> Past perfect tense: She had written a letter.
