Southern Nigeria has produced many notable nationalists who played significant roles in the country's struggle for independence. Some of these nationalists include Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dr. Alvan Ikoku, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Pa Michael Imoudu.
1. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe's Biography and Nationalist Activities:
Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was born on November 16, 1904, in Zungeru, Nigeria. He was a politician, journalist, and educator who served as the first President of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966. Azikiwe was a key figure in the country's struggle for independence, and his nationalist activities included:
- Founding the West African Pilot newspaper, which became a powerful tool for promoting Nigerian nationalism.
- Serving as the leader of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), a political party that advocated for Nigerian independence.
