TENDERTOES ACADEMYLesson Plan: Introduction to Inequalities
Grade Level: 1
Topic: Comparing Numbers (>, <, =)
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Compare two numbers up to 100
Use the symbols:
> (greater than)
< (less than)
= (equal to)
Explain their answers using simple language
Materials Needed
whiteboard
Objects (e.g., pencils, counters)
Worksheets
Introduction
Show two groups of objects:
Example: 5 pencils and 3 pencils
Ask:
“Which group has more?”
“Which group has fewer?”
Introduce symbols:
> means greater than (more)
< means less than (fewer)
= means equal (same)
Activity
Step 1: Demonstration
Write on the board:
100 __ 99
Ask students which symbol fits.
Explain:
100 is bigger than 99 → 100 > 99
Step 2: Guided Practice
Use the signs < > or = correctly
1. 10 + 3 = 13 and 9 + 8 = 17
→ 13 < 17
Answer: 10 + 3 < 9 + 8
2. 6 − 5 = 1 and 0 + 5 = 5
→ 1 < 5
Answer: 6 − 5 < 0 + 5
3. 11 + 7 = 18 and 2 × 9 = 18
→ 18 = 18
Answer: 11 + 7 = 2 × 9
4. 7 − 3 = 4 and 9 − 6 = 3
→ 4 > 3
Answer: 7 − 3 > 9 − 6
4. 7 + 5 = 12 and 3 × 4 = 12
→ 12 = 12
Answer: 7 + 5 = 3 × 4
Step 3: Underline the right word in the following
1. 2/4 and 3/4 (same denominator)
→ Compare the top numbers: 2 < 3
Answer: 2/4 is less than 3/4
2. 5/9 and 6/9 (same denominator)
→ 5 < 6
Answer: 5/9 is less than 6/9
3. 2/3 and 1/3 (same denominator)
→ 2 > 1
Answer: 2/3 is greater than 1/3
