LESSON CONTENT
STEP 1: CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCY
Consumer protection agency is an agency set up to monitor the activities of the manufacturer in order to prevent any excessive or arbitrary behavior.
CONSUMER PROTECTION
Consumer protection can be defined as the various ways and methods adopted by the government and private organisations to ensure that consumers are not cheated by the producers and that they derive maximum satisfaction from the goods and services they purchase.
A consumer is an individual who makes the final use of goods and services provided by a firm.
STEP 2: BENEFITS OF CONSUMER PROTECTION
Protecting the consumer from bad products or service ensures the following benefits:
1. Consumers enjoy to the maximum the goods and services they have purchased with hard-earned money.
2. There is need to reduce price increase caused by artificial scarcity.
3. High quality goods and services are made available to the consumer when there are avenues for protection and redress.
4. There is a constant supply of essential goods and services to the consumer.
5. Consumers are protected from dangerous or expired goods which are harmful to the body.
6. Manufacturers do not use deceptive weights and measures in selling.
7. The consumer is protected from false advertisement claims.
STEP 3: RIGHT OF THE CONSUMER
The following are the rights the consumer enjoys, and they are usually referred to as the eight universal consumer rights.
1. Right to be informed.
2. Right to safety
3. Right to redress
4. Right to choose
5. Right to get value for money.
6. Right to the good things of life.
7. Right to be heard
8. Right to a healthy environment.
