LESSON CONTENT
STEP 1: ORGANS OF CONSUMER PROTECTION
Organs of consumer protection can be categorized into three distinct groupings as follows:
A. GOVERNMENT ORGANISATION
1. NATIONAL AGENCY FOR FOOD, DRUG ADMINISTRATION AND CONTROL (NAFDAC)
This agency was established to examine the contents, composition and expiration date of food or drug items in order to determine whether they are injurious to health.
2. CONSUMER PROTECTION COUNCIL
The responsibility of this department is to ensure that advertisement and promotion goods are to the benefit of the consumer and that the products advertised meet the standards as portrayed in the advert.
3. RENT TRIBUNALS
The rent tribunals are set up by the government to regulate any matter relating to rentage of houses, shops etc.
4. PRICE CONTROL BOARD
To protect the customers from paying exorbitant prices.
5. STANDARD ORGANISATION OF NIGERIA (SON)
They ensure high quality products are made in the country or imported into the country.
They also ensure that production of goods is done in hygienic environment.
6. NATIONAL ELECTRICITY REGULATORY COUNCIL
This organization is responsible for regulating how much consumers pay for electricity and also ensures that electricity is available.
7. MINISTRY OF HEALTH
This ministry regulates the safety of food items, including the cleanliness of abattoirs, the healthiness of animals to be slaughtered and safety of food items.
8. MINISTRY OF COMMERCE
The regulation of imports and exports is the responsibility of the Ministry of commerce.
9. MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT
This ministry is responsible for the regulation of the houses to be built and the sanitation of the environment.
10. MINISTRY OF AVIATION
This ministry regulates the aviation industry by ensuring that standards on air worthiness, flying hours of plains, air safety standard etc are maintained.
11. NATIONAL WAGES AND SALARIES COMMISSION
This commission was set up by the government to regulate the reward for labour by determining appropriate wages and salaries of workers.
12. NATIONAL DRUG LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY (NDLEA)
This agency was established by the federal government to eradicate trafficking in hard drugs.
13. NATIONAL AGENCY FOR THE PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC IN PERSONS AND OTHER RELATED MATTERS (NAPTIP)
The protection of young under-aged and vulnerable people is the main assignment of this agency. The agency is to eradicate trafficking in human beings and prosecute culprits.
STEP 2: B. LEGISLATION ON CONSUMER ISSUES
1. RENT EDICT: This edict was established to restrain landlords and their agents against excesses in the administration of tenancy agreement.
2. CONSUMER PROTECTION COUNCIL ACT
Under this law, consumers are guaranteed speedy redress to complaints.
