1. Definition and Purpose
In oral communication, we use physical cues—pauses, facial expressions, and changes in voice pitch—to make our meaning clear. In written communication, we lack these tools.
Punctuation is the system of standardized symbols used in writing to organize text, signal pauses, and clarify meaning. Without punctuation, written text becomes a chaotic stream of words that is difficult to interpret.
2. Key Punctuation Marks and Their Functions
- The Full Stop (.): Used to mark the end of a complete declarative or imperative sentence.
- Example: "The technician calibrated the machinery."
- The Comma (,): Used to separate items in a list, join independent clauses with a coordinating conjunction, or set off parenthetical (extra) information.
- Example: "Before starting the generator, check the oil, fuel, and water levels."
- The Question Mark (?): Placed at the end of a direct question.
- Example: "Did you complete the electrical safety inspection?"
- The Ellipsis (...): A series of three dots indicating that words have been omitted or that a thought is trailing off.
