JADE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLHello, JSS 1! Today, we're talking about Nouns. Simply put, a noun is a naming word. It names a person, a place, an animal, or a thing. Look around your classroom – everything you see that has a name is a noun!
What is a Noun?
A noun is a word used to identify any of a class of people, places, animals, or things, or to name a particular one of these.
For example, book, teacher, school, dog are all nouns.
Types of Nouns There are many types, but for now, we'll focus on two main ones:
Common Nouns: These are general names for people, places, animals, or things. They are not capitalized unless they start a sentence.
Examples: boy, girl, city, river, market, student, chair.
Here, children is a common noun.
Proper Nouns: These are specific names for particular people, places, animals, or things. Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter.
Examples: John, Aisha, Lagos, River Niger, Monday, Mr. Bello.
Lagos is a proper noun because it names a specific city.
Look around your home or classroom right now. Can you spot five common nouns and three proper nouns? For homework, write them down and share them in our next class.
