A verb is a word that shows an action, an occurrence, or a state of being. It is the most important part of a sentence because it tells us what the subject is doing or what is happening. Examples include run, eat, is, become.
Transitive verbs are verbs that transfer their action to an object. This means they need a direct object to complete their meaning. Without an object, a sentence with a transitive verb often feels incomplete or doesn't make sense.
Intransitive verbs are verbs that do not transfer their action to an object. They can complete their meaning by themselves or with other words that are not direct objects (like adverbs or prepositional phrases).
An object is the noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb. To find it, ask "What?" or "Whom?" after the verb.
Transitive verbs pass their action to an object, while intransitive verbs do not need an object to make sense.
A descriptive essay is a type of essay that aims to describe a person, place, object, experience, emotion, or situation vividly. Its main purpose is to create a clear and strong mental picture for the reader, making them feel like they are experiencing what is being described.
Last holiday, my family and I visited the Lekki Conservation Centre, a beautiful nature reserve in Lagos. As we stepped through the entrance, a wave of fresh, earthy air greeted us, instantly replacing the city's usual dusty smell. It felt like entering a different world, far away from the busy streets.
The first thing that caught my eye were the towering, ancient trees that formed a dense green canopy above us. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, creating dancing patterns of light and shadow on the ground. We walked along the famous Canopy Walkway, a long, narrow bridge suspended high above the forest floor. From up there, the view was breathtaking! I could hear the constant chirping of unseen birds and the rustle of leaves as a gentle breeze swept through. Below, monkeys swung playfully from branch to branch, their agile movements a joy to watch. The air felt cool and refreshing against my skin.
Further into the reserve, we discovered a large pond where turtles swam lazily, their dark shells gleaming under the sun. The water was calm and reflected the surrounding greenery like a mirror. The path was sometimes uneven, made of rough wooden planks, reminding us that we were truly in nature. The peaceful atmosphere made me feel calm and connected to the environment.
Leaving the centre, I carried with me not just photographs, but vivid memories of the lush greenery, the playful monkeys, and the serene quietness. It was an unforgettable experience that reminded me of the beauty and importance of preserving our natural world.
A descriptive essay paints a picture with words, using sensory details, vivid vocabulary, and a clear structure to bring a place or experience to life for the reader.
