GOLDEN STARS MONTESSORI ACADEMYSubject: Computer Science / ICT Class: JSS 2 Topic: Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Meaning, Types, and Applications Duration: 40 Minutes (Self-paced study)
In our previous lessons, we learned that a computer is an electronic machine that follows instructions to process data. However, traditional computers can only do exactly what they are told to do by a programmer. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of Computer Science that aims to create machines and software capable of "thinking" and "learning" like a human being.
Instead of just following a fixed list of instructions, an AI system can analyze data, recognize patterns, solve problems, and make decisions. Think of it this way: a regular calculator can add 2+2 because it was programmed with that rule. An AI system, however, can look at thousands of pictures of cats and eventually "learn" to identify a cat in a new picture it has never seen before, much like a human child learns.
Human intelligence involves learning from experience, understanding complex concepts, and adapting to new situations. AI tries to mimic these traits. While a computer doesn't have a "brain" made of cells, it uses algorithms (mathematical rules) and Big Data (huge amounts of information) to simulate intelligence. In Nigeria today, AI is becoming part of our daily lives, from the way we use our smartphones to how banks detect fraud.
To understand AI better, scientists usually categorize it into different levels based on what the AI can actually do:
Narrow AI (Weak AI): This is the most common type of AI we use today. "Narrow" means the AI is designed to handle one specific task very well. For example, a voice assistant like Siri or Google Assistant is great at understanding speech and looking up information, but it cannot drive a car or perform surgery. It is "weak" because it operates under a limited set of constraints.
General AI (Strong AI): This is a type of AI that would have the ability to understand, learn, and apply its intelligence to any problem, just like a human. A General AI could write a poem, fix a car, and explain a math problem all at once. Currently, General AI does not exist; it is still a subject of research and science fiction movies.
Super AI: This refers to a future where AI becomes much smarter than the brightest human minds in every field, including scientific creativity and social skills. This is purely theoretical and does not exist yet.
AI is not just in robots; it is already all around us. Here are scenarios you likely encounter:
Scenario A: Social Media Feed (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook) Have you noticed that if you watch two or three videos about football, your feed suddenly starts showing you more football content? This is AI. An algorithm analyzes your behavior (what you like, how long you watch) and predicts what will keep you entertained.
Scenario B: Navigation and Traffic (Google Maps) When Musa wants to travel from Ikeja to Lekki in Lagos, he uses Google Maps. The AI in the app analyzes real-time data from thousands of other phones to detect traffic jams and suggests a faster alternative route. It "predicts" the arrival time based on current patterns.
Scenario C: Banking and Security When someone tries to use a bank card in a way that is unusual (for example, making a very large purchase in a different city), AI systems at the bank flag it as "suspicious." The AI has learned your "normal" spending habits and recognizes when something doesn't fit the pattern.
AI works through a process called Machine Learning. Here is a step-by-step look at how a common AI application, like Facial Recognition on a smartphone, works:
You don’t need a computer to understand how AI logic works. You can build a "Logic Tree" which is the foundation of how AI Chatbots (like ChatGPT) are designed to respond to users.

Understanding AI helps you become a better digital citizen. In a world of "Deepfakes" (AI-generated fake videos) and "AI Art," you must learn to question the information you see online. AI literacy teaches you to ask: Is this real? How was this data collected?
