HOME ECONOMICS: JSS 2 CLASS NOTE

TOPIC: Resources and Decision Making

Welcome, JSS 2 students! Today, we are going to explore two very important ideas in Home Economics: Resources and Decision Making. These ideas are not just for textbooks; they are skills you use every single day, at home, at school, and everywhere else! Understanding them will help you manage your life better and achieve your goals.

Comprehensive Core Concepts

1. What are Resources?

Imagine you want to build a sandcastle. What do you need? Sand, water, your hands, a bucket, maybe a shovel, and time. All these things – the sand, water, your hands, the bucket, the shovel, and your time – are resources.

In Home Economics, resources are anything an individual, family, or community can use to achieve their goals, satisfy their needs, or solve problems. They are the tools and means we have at our disposal to make things happen.

Resources are not always about money or things you can touch. Your skills, your energy, and even the time you have are all valuable resources. Learning to identify, use, and manage your resources wisely is a key step towards living a successful and fulfilling life.

Types of Resources

Resources can be broadly classified into different types. Let's look at the main ones:

a) Human Resources

Human resources are the capabilities, qualities, and characteristics that people possess. These are internal resources that come from within us or from other people.

Skills: These are abilities you have learned to do something well. For example, cooking, cleaning, repairing, reading, writing, problem-solving, or playing a musical instrument. If you are good at sweeping, that's a skill. If you can help your younger sibling with their homework, that's a skill.
Knowledge: This is the information and understanding you have about various subjects or tasks. For instance, knowing how to prepare a healthy meal, understanding safety rules at home, or knowing the best way to save water. Your school lessons are helping you build knowledge!
Time: This is the most valuable and non-renewable resource. Everyone has 24 hours in a day. How we choose to spend that time is crucial. We use time for studying, playing, sleeping, helping with chores, and much more. Managing time well helps us achieve more.
Energy: This refers to your physical and mental strength, drive, and enthusiasm. You need energy to perform tasks like running errands, cleaning the house, or even concentrating during lessons. Eating well and resting properly helps you maintain your energy levels.
Attitude: This is your way of thinking or feeling about something. A positive attitude can help you overcome challenges, while a negative one can make tasks seem harder. Being patient, cooperative, and optimistic are great human resources.

b) Material Resources

Material resources are the tangible things (things you can touch and see) that individuals or families own or have access to. They are external resources.

Money: This is perhaps the most common material resource. It is used to buy goods and services, pay bills, and save for the future. How you spend your pocket money or how your parents manage family income are examples of using money as a resource.
Goods/Possessions: These include items like food, clothes, furniture, books, utensils, appliances (like refrigerators, blenders), vehicles, and houses. These items help us meet our daily needs and improve our comfort and quality of life.
Equipment: This refers to tools and machinery used to perform specific tasks. Examples include brooms, mops, cooking pots, sewing machines, computers, and gardening tools. Proper equipment can make tasks easier and faster.
Land: This is a material resource, especially important in rural areas for farming, or in urban areas for building homes and businesses. Even the small space around your house is a form of land resource.

c) Natural Resources (Briefly)

While often studied in Geography, natural resources are also relevant to Home Economics as they affect our daily lives and decisions. These are resources that exist without human intervention.

Water: Essential for drinking, cooking, bathing, and cleaning.
Air: Necessary for breathing.
Sunlight: Provides light and warmth, and can be used for drying clothes or even generating electricity.
Plants and Animals: Provide food, clothing, and other materials.

Managing these natural resources responsibly (e.g., conserving water, reducing waste) is a crucial part of home management.

2. Characteristics of Resources

Resources, whether human, material, or natural, share some common characteristics:

a) Resources are Limited (Scarce)

This is a very important characteristic. Most resources are not available in endless supply. There's only so much money, so much time in a day, and even our energy can run out.

Example: You have ₦500 pocket money for the week. You cannot buy everything you want with that money; it is limited. You also only have a limited amount of time after school before it's bedtime; you can't play forever and still do your homework. This scarcity forces us to make choices and manage what we have carefully.

b) Resources are Interrelated

This means that different resources are connected and affect each other. You often need one resource to use another effectively.

Example: To cook a meal (using food as a material resource), you need your skill and knowledge (human resources), time (human resource), and cooking pots (material resource). If you lack one, the others might not be as useful. If you have money but no time, you might buy fast food instead of cooking.

c) Resources Can Be Developed

Many resources can be improved or increased over time with effort and investment.

Example: Your skills and knowledge (human resources) can be developed through learning, practice, and education. The more you study and practice, the better you become. Your parents' income (material resource) can be developed through hard work, education, or investing.

d) Resources Can Be Conserved and Managed

Because resources are limited, it's essential to use them wisely, avoid waste, and preserve them for future use. This is called conservation and management.

Example: Turning off lights when leaving a room conserves electricity (material/natural resource). Fixing a leaky tap conserves water (natural resource). Planning your time well helps you manage your time effectively (human resource). Taking care of your clothes and books makes them last longer (material resources).

3. Importance of Resources

Resources are vital for several reasons:

Meeting Needs and Wants: Resources help us get the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the shelter we live in, and the education we receive. They satisfy our basic needs and allow us to enjoy certain wants.
Achieving Goals: Whether your goal is to pass your exams, save money for a new book, or help your family complete a project, resources are the means to achieve these goals.
Improving Quality of Life: Effective use of resources can lead to a more comfortable, healthy, and happy life. For instance, having enough food, a safe home, and access to education all contribute to a better quality of life.
Solving Problems: Resources provide solutions to challenges. If there's a problem with a broken item at home, having the right tools (material resource) and the skill to fix it (human resource) solves the problem.

4. What is Decision Making?

Now that we understand resources, let's talk about decision making.

Decision making is the process of choosing one option or course of action from a set of alternatives. It's about making a choice when you have more than one possibility. We make decisions constantly, from small everyday choices to big life-changing ones.

Example: Should I wear the blue shirt or the green one? Should I eat rice or yam for lunch? Should I play outside or finish my homework first? These are all decisions.

The ability to make good decisions is a very important life skill. It helps us use our resources wisely and achieve positive outcomes. Sometimes, making a decision can be difficult, especially when the options have different advantages and disadvantages. This is why having a clear process for decision making is helpful.

5. Steps in the Decision-Making Process

Making good decisions, especially important ones, usually involves following a series of logical steps. This process helps you think carefully and choose the best option.

Step 1: Identify the Problem or Goal

Before you can make a decision, you need to clearly understand what decision needs to be made, what problem you're trying to solve, or what goal you want to achieve.

Explanation: Ask yourself: "What exactly do I need to decide?" or "What is the challenge I'm facing?" or "What do I want to accomplish?" A clear understanding of the situation is the first step. If you don't know what the problem is, you can't find a solution.
Example: Your problem might be: "My school uniform is torn, and I need a new one." Or your goal might be: "I want to save enough money to buy a new storybook by next month."

Step 2: Gather Information and Explore Options

Once you know what needs to be decided, the next step is to collect relevant information and think about all the possible choices or solutions available to you. Don't just pick the first idea that comes to mind!

Explanation: Think broadly. What are all the different ways you could achieve your goal or solve your problem? Talk to people, read, observe, or simply brainstorm ideas. Consider your available resources at this stage.
Example (uniform): Options could be: 1) Ask my mum to buy a new one. 2) Ask my mum to mend the torn one. 3) Use my saved pocket money to buy a new one. 4) Ask an elder sibling if they have an old uniform they don't use.
Example (storybook): Options could be: 1) Save a portion of my daily pocket money. 2) Do extra chores for a small reward. 3) Ask my parents to buy it for my birthday.

Step 3: Analyze Options (Weigh Pros and Cons)

After listing all your possible options, the next crucial step is to carefully look at each one. Think about the advantages (pros) and disadvantages (cons) of each choice.

Explanation: Consider how each option affects your resources (time, money, energy, etc.) and if it aligns with your values or family rules. What are the potential outcomes of each choice? This step helps you see the bigger picture.
Example (uniform - option 2: mend the torn one):
- Pros: Saves money, teaches me to be resourceful, I can wear it sooner.
- Cons: Might not look as new, requires time and skill to mend.
Example (uniform - option 3: use pocket money):
- Pros: I feel independent, I get a completely new uniform.
- Cons: I will have less money for other things, it might take longer to save.

Step 4: Make a Choice

After carefully analyzing all the options, it's time to select the best one based on your analysis. This is where you commit to a particular course of action.

Explanation: Choose the option that seems most likely to achieve your goal, solve your problem effectively, and make the best use of your resources, considering the pros and cons. Sometimes there's no perfect choice, just the best choice under the circumstances.
Example: After thinking, you decide that mending the uniform (with your mum's help) is the best choice because it saves money and you can wear it quickly. Or, for the storybook, you decide to save a portion of your pocket money each day.

Step 5: Implement the Decision

This step is about putting your chosen plan into action. A decision is just an idea until you actually do something about it.

Explanation: Take the necessary steps to carry out your decision. This might involve talking to someone, doing a task, or starting a new habit.
Example (uniform): You approach your mum, explain the situation, and ask her to help you mend the uniform. You then help her with the mending.
Example (storybook): You start putting aside ₦50 from your pocket money every day into a savings box.

Step 6: Evaluate the Decision

After you have implemented your decision, it's important to look back and see how it worked out. Was it a good decision? Did it solve the problem or achieve the goal?

Explanation: Reflect on the outcome. What went well? What didn't go so well? What did you learn from this experience? This evaluation helps you make even better decisions in the future. If the decision didn't work out as planned, you might need to go back to Step 1 and try a different approach.
Example (uniform): You wear the mended uniform. It looks good and you saved money. You feel proud of being resourceful. You learn that mending can be a good solution.
Example (storybook): After a month, you have enough money and buy the storybook. You feel happy about your saving habit. You learn that consistent saving helps you reach financial goals.

6. Factors Influencing Decision Making

Many things can affect the decisions we make. These factors can be internal (from within us) or external (from our environment).

Values: These are your beliefs about what is important in life. Your values guide your choices. If you value honesty, you will make decisions that reflect that. If you value saving money, you'll think twice before spending on unnecessary things.
Goals: Your goals (what you want to achieve) strongly influence your decisions. If your goal is to do well in school, you will decide to spend more time studying.
Family Situation: Decisions are often made within a family context. What your family needs, their financial situation, and their rules can all influence your choices. For example, a family's budget will influence what kind of holiday they can afford.
Available Resources: The resources you have (or don't have) directly impact your options. If you have limited money, you can't choose an expensive option. If you have limited time, you can't take on many tasks.
Peer Influence: Friends and classmates can sometimes influence your decisions, both positively and negatively. It's important to think for yourself and make choices that are right for you, even if your friends suggest something different.
Culture and Tradition: The customs, beliefs, and practices of your community or ethnic group can also shape your decisions, especially regarding food, clothing, celebrations, and social interactions.

7. Importance of Good Decision Making

Making good decisions is crucial for several reasons:

Achieving Goals: Good decisions help you move closer to what you want to achieve in life.
Effective Resource Management: Wise decisions ensure that you use your limited resources (time, money, energy) efficiently and avoid waste.
Avoiding Problems: Thinking through options carefully can help you prevent mistakes and avoid difficult situations.
Personal Growth: Each decision you make and evaluate helps you learn and grow, making you a more responsible and capable individual.
Building Confidence: When you consistently make good choices and see positive results, it builds your confidence in your ability to handle future challenges.

Real-World Examples

Let's look at how resources and decision-making play out in everyday situations for you and your family.

Scenario 1: Deciding What to Eat for Dinner with Limited Ingredients and Time

Imagine it's evening, and your mum asks you to help decide what to cook for dinner. You look in the fridge and pantry.

Available Resources:
- Material: Some rice, a few tomatoes, half an onion, vegetable oil, one piece of fish, some seasoning cubes. Limited money if you want to buy more ingredients.
- Human: Your mum's cooking skill and experience, your energy to help, limited time before everyone gets too hungry.
Decision-Making Process:
1. Problem: What can we cook for dinner with what we have?
2. Options:
  - Cook plain rice and stew with the available ingredients.
  - Cook Jollof rice with the available ingredients.
  - Cook boiled yam and stew (but you don't have yam).
  - Buy more ingredients to cook something else (but money is limited and it will take more time).
3. Analyze:
  - Plain rice and stew: Easy, quick, uses available ingredients.
  - Jollof rice: A bit more complex, tastes good, uses available ingredients.
  - Buying more: Costs money, takes more time, maybe not necessary.
4. Choice: You and your mum decide Jollof rice is a good option because it uses all the available ingredients, is satisfying, and you have enough time and skill to prepare it.
5. Implement: You both start preparing the Jollof rice.
6. Evaluate: Everyone enjoys the Jollof rice. It was a good decision because you used available resources wisely to make a tasty meal without extra spending or delay.

Scenario 2: Deciding How to Spend Your Pocket Money Wisely

You just received ₦200 for your break time at school. You have several things you'd like to buy.

Available Resources:
- Material: ₦200 cash.
- Human: Your knowledge of healthy snacks, your self-control.
Decision-Making Process:
1. Problem: How to spend ₦200 pocket money to satisfy my needs and wants.
2. Options:
  - Buy a big packet of biscuits.
  - Buy a small snack and save the rest.
  - Buy a drink and a small snack.
  - Buy a fruit and pure water.
3. Analyze:
  - Big biscuit: Fills you up, but maybe not very healthy, no money left.
  - Small snack & save: You still eat, and you have money for later or to save for a bigger item.
  - Drink & snack: Good combination, but might finish all the money.
  - Fruit & pure water: Healthy, refreshing, good value for money.
4. Choice: You decide to buy a banana (₦50) and a sachet of pure water (₦20), and save the remaining ₦130 for another day or towards a bigger goal.
5. Implement: You buy the fruit and water, and put the rest of the money carefully in your bag.
6. Evaluate: You feel refreshed and healthy, and you still have money left. This was a smart decision!

Scenario 3: Deciding on a Family Outing or Holiday

Your family wants to go on an outing during the long holiday.

Available Resources:
- Material: A certain amount of family savings for the trip, a family car, some clothes for travel.
- Human: Parents' time off work, your siblings' and your availability, everyone's preferences, parents' driving skills.
Decision-Making Process:
1. Problem: Where should the family go for a holiday outing that everyone will enjoy and is within budget?
2. Options:
  - Visit a relative in another state (requires transport, accommodation, food).
  - Go to a local park/beach for a day trip (less cost, less travel).
  - Stay home and do fun activities together (very low cost, but not an "outing").
  - Visit a museum or historical site.
3. Analyze:
  - Visiting relatives: Good for family bonding, but might be expensive if far, requires planning.
  - Local park/beach: Affordable, relaxing, good for a day.
  - Museum: Educational, interesting, usually affordable.
4. Choice: After discussing family budget, travel time, and everyone's preferences, you decide to visit a nearby historical site and then have a picnic at a park. This balances cost, fun, and education.
5. Implement: Your parents make arrangements, pack food, and you all go on the outing.
6. Evaluate: Everyone had a great time, learned something new, and it was within the family's budget. A successful outing!

Practical Applications (Step-by-step guides)

Let's put the decision-making process into practice with a common household problem.

Practical Task: Organizing a Cluttered Shelf in Your Room

You look at a shelf in your room, and it's full of books, toys, papers, and random items, making it hard to find anything.

Step-by-Step Application:

Identify the Problem/Goal:
- Problem: The shelf is cluttered, messy, and I can't find my things.
- Goal: To organize the shelf so it's neat, tidy, and easy to find items.
Gather Information/Explore Options:
- Information: What items are on the shelf? Do I use them regularly? Are they important? Do I need more storage boxes?
- Options:
  - Option A: Just stack everything neatly (might still be hard to find things).
  - Option B: Remove everything, sort into categories, throw away/donate unused items, put back only what's needed.
  - Option C: Buy new storage containers and then organize.
  - Option D: Ask my sibling to help me organize.
Analyze Options (Pros and Cons):
- Option A (Stack neatly):
  - Pros: Quick, doesn't require much effort.
  - Cons: Items might still be hard to find, not a long-term solution.
- Option B (Remove, sort, declutter, put back):
  - Pros: Thoroughly organized, easy to find things, creates more space, gets rid of unnecessary items.
  - Cons: Takes more time and effort.
- Option C (Buy new containers):
  - Pros: Looks very neat, containers can hide clutter.
  - Cons: Costs money (material resource), might just be hiding clutter if not sorted first.
- Option D (Ask sibling):
  - Pros: Shared workload, might get new ideas.
  - Cons: Sibling might not be available or interested, might not organize it the way I like.
Make a Choice:
- You decide that Option B (Remove everything, sort, declutter, put back only what's needed) is the best choice. Although it takes more time, it's the most effective way to truly solve the clutter problem and make the shelf functional again. You also decide that you don't need new containers if you declutter properly.
Implement the Decision:
- Action 1: Clear everything off the shelf and place it on a clean mat on the floor.
- Action 2: Create three piles: "Keep," "Donate/Give Away," and "Throw Away."
- Action 3: Go through each item from the shelf.
  - Question: "Do I use this regularly?" If yes, "Keep."
  - Question: "Is this broken or useless?" If yes, "Throw Away."
  - Question: "Do I still need this, or can someone else benefit?" If yes, "Donate/Give Away."
- Action 4: Dust and clean the empty shelf.
- Action 5: Arrange the "Keep" items back on the shelf logically (e.g., books together, school supplies together).
- Action 6: Take the "Throw Away" items to the dustbin and put the "Donate/Give Away" items in a bag for charity or to give to someone.
Evaluate the Decision:
- Look at your organized shelf. Is it neat? Can you find your things easily?
- Outcome: Yes, the shelf is now tidy, and you can quickly find your books and other items. You feel a sense of accomplishment.
- Learning: You learned that taking the time to declutter properly is more effective than just tidying, and you also conserved your money by not buying new storage. This experience will help you organize other areas of your room in the future.

Suggested Home Projects

These projects will help you apply what you've learned about resources and decision-making in your own home.

Project 1: My Family's Resource Map

Goal: To identify and appreciate the diverse resources available within your family and home.

Materials Needed:

Large sheet of paper or cardboard
Pens, pencils, coloured markers
Ruler
Optional: Old magazines, scissors, glue (for pictures)

Procedure:

Divide your paper: Draw a circle in the middle and label it "My Family's Resources." Divide the rest of the paper into sections for "Human Resources" and "Material Resources."
Brainstorm Human Resources: Think about each family member (including yourself). What skills do they have? (e.g., Mum: cooking, budgeting; Dad: fixing things, driving; Sister: good at homework, helping with chores; Me: sweeping, running errands, good listener). What knowledge do they possess? How much time and energy do they contribute to the family? List these under "Human Resources."
Brainstorm Material Resources: Look around your home. What material things does your family have? (e.g., money, food supplies, furniture, appliances like fridge/TV, clothes, books, car, house). List these under "Material Resources."
Add Natural Resources (briefly): You can add a small section for natural resources your family benefits from, like access to clean water, sunlight for drying clothes, fresh air.
Illustrate (Optional): Draw small pictures or cut out images from old magazines to represent some of the resources.
Reflect: Look at your completed map. How many resources does your family have? How do these resources help your family achieve its goals and live comfortably?

Expected Outcome: A visual representation of your family's resources, fostering appreciation and awareness of what is available to support your family's needs and goals.

Project 2: The "Smart Spender" Challenge

Goal: To practice financial decision-making and manage your personal money resource effectively.

Materials Needed:

Small notebook or piece of paper for tracking
Pen/pencil
Your pocket money for one week

Procedure:

Start Date: Note the date you start the challenge.
Record Income: Write down the total amount of money you receive at the beginning of the week (e.g., "Monday: Received ₦500").
Set a Goal: Decide on something small you'd like to save for (e.g., a new pen, a special snack, adding to a bigger saving goal).
Track Every Expenditure: For an entire week, every time you spend money, no matter how small the amount, write it down.
- Example:
  - Tuesday: Bought biscuit ₦50. Remaining: ₦450.
  - Wednesday: Bought pure water ₦20. Remaining: ₦430.
  - Thursday: Saved ₦100 for my new pen. Remaining: ₦330.
Review at Week's End: At the end of the week, look at your spending record.
- How much did you spend?
- How much did you save?
- Did you achieve your saving goal?
- Were there any unnecessary expenses?
Plan for Next Week: Based on your review, make a better spending plan for the following week. How can you be even smarter with your money?

Expected Outcome: Improved awareness of spending habits, better management of pocket money, and the development of saving skills. You will learn to make conscious decisions about your money.

Project 3: Meal Planning & Budgeting

Goal: To apply resource management and decision-making to food planning for a family.

Materials Needed:

Notebook or paper
Pen/pencil
Access to your family's kitchen and pantry (with permission)
Optional: Access to market prices (ask parents or visit market)

Procedure:

Observe (Day 1): With your parents' permission, observe what meals are prepared for breakfast, lunch, and dinner in your home for one day. Note down the ingredients used.
Inventory (Day 2): Look in your kitchen pantry and fridge. Make a list of common food items your family already has (e.g., rice, yam, garri, beans, oil, spices, some vegetables). These are your existing material resources.
Plan 3 Days of Meals (Day 3): Based on the ingredients you already have and what your family likes, plan three days of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Try to use up existing ingredients first.
- Example:
  - Day 1 Breakfast: Pap and Akara (if beans are available)
  - Day 1 Lunch: Rice and Stew (using existing rice, tomatoes, oil)
  - Day 1 Dinner: Eba and Okro Soup (if garri and okro are available)
Create a Shopping List & Budget: For any ingredients you need to buy to complete your 3-day meal plan, make a shopping list. Then, estimate how much each item will cost (ask your parents for typical prices). This is your "budget" for the extra ingredients.
Present to Family: Share your 3-day meal plan and shopping list with your family. Discuss your choices and why you made them (e.g., "I chose Jollof rice because we have rice and tomatoes, saving money").
Reflect:
- How did planning help?
- Did you discover new ways to use existing ingredients?
- How did you balance family preferences with available resources?

Expected Outcome: Understanding how to plan meals efficiently, minimize food waste, manage food resources, and make budget-conscious decisions for family nutrition.

Life Skills Integration

The concepts of resources and decision-making are not just for Home Economics class; they are fundamental life skills that you will use throughout your life.

Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving:
- Learning about resources helps you identify what you have to solve problems.
- The decision-making process teaches you to analyze situations, evaluate options, and choose the best solution. This makes you a better problem-solver in all areas of life, from school assignments to personal challenges.
Time Management:
- Time is a precious human resource. Understanding its value helps you make decisions about how to spend your hours wisely – balancing school, chores, rest, and play. This skill is vital for success in academics and future careers.
Financial Literacy:
- Money is a key material resource. Learning to manage it through decision-making (like in the "Smart Spender" challenge) teaches you about budgeting, saving, and responsible spending. These are essential for personal financial stability and future independence.
Resourcefulness and Sustainability:
- Knowing your resources helps you be resourceful – using what you have creatively before seeking new things. This promotes sustainability, reducing waste and making the most of what's available, which is good for your family and the environment.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Many decisions, especially in a family, involve discussing with others. Learning to communicate your thoughts, listen to others' opinions, and collaborate to reach a shared decision is a crucial social skill.

Career Connections:

Entrepreneurship/Business: Entrepreneurs constantly make decisions about how to use limited resources (money, employees, materials) to create products or services.
Management: Managers in any field (e.g., project managers, hotel managers, school principals) use decision-making to allocate resources effectively and achieve organizational goals.
Finance/Accounting: Professionals in these fields specialize in managing financial resources and advising others on financial decisions.
Hospitality/Catering: Chefs and caterers make decisions about ingredients, budget, and time to prepare meals and manage kitchens.
Education: Teachers make decisions about lesson plans, classroom resources, and student learning strategies.
Healthcare: Doctors and nurses make critical decisions about patient care, often with limited resources.

These skills are invaluable for any path you choose!

Assessment Through Application

Instead of just writing definitions, let's see how well you can apply these concepts.

Case Study Analysis:
- Scenario: Your family wants to repaint the living room walls. You have ₦15,000 saved for this project. You need paint, brushes, rollers, and masking tape. Your dad is busy, but your elder brother is good at painting.
- Task: Using the 6 steps of the decision-making process, outline how your family would decide on the best way to repaint the living room, considering the available resources.
- Assessment: Look for clear application of each step, thoughtful analysis of options, and logical decision-making based on the scenario's resources.
"Resource Detective" Activity:
- Task: Choose one room in your house (e.g., kitchen, bathroom, your bedroom). For 15 minutes, act as a "Resource Detective."
- Activity: List all the human and material resources you observe being used or available in that room within the 15 minutes. Also, note any instances of good resource management or potential waste.
- Assessment: Evaluate the thoroughness of the list and the insights into resource management.
Role-Playing:
- Scenario: You and a friend want to prepare a special snack for your family using only ingredients found in your kitchen. You have limited ingredients (e.g., flour, sugar, eggs, one fruit).
- Task: Role-play the decision-making process between you and your friend. Show how you discuss options, weigh pros and cons, and decide on a snack.
- Assessment: Observe the students' ability to follow the decision-making steps, communicate effectively, and use available resources creatively.
Project Presentation:
- Task: Present one of your completed home projects (e.g., "My Family's Resource Map" or "Smart Spender Challenge" report) to the class. Explain your findings and the decisions you made.
- Assessment: Evaluate the clarity of the presentation, the depth of understanding demonstrated, and the practical application of concepts.

Student Reflection Questions

Think deeply about these questions and write down your answers in your notebook.

Before this lesson, did you realize how many resources you and your family use every day? Give three examples of resources you often take for granted.
Can you think of a time when you made a decision without thinking through all the steps? What was the outcome? What did you learn from it?
How does understanding that resources are "limited" change the way you think about using things like water, electricity, or even your own time?
Imagine you have a big school project due next week, and you also want to play football with your friends. How would you use the decision-making process to manage your time and energy (human resources) effectively?
What is one new thing you learned about decision-making that you will try to apply in your daily life starting today?
How can you encourage your family members to think more about resource management and good decision-making at home? Give a specific example.
