Social Studies Class Note: Economic Values
Introduction
Economic values are principles and habits that help individuals and nations manage resources wisely to achieve financial stability and growth. In Nigeria, practicing these values—Thrift, Saving, Investment, and Entrepreneurship—is essential for personal success and national development. These habits help us move from being mere consumers to becoming wealth creators.

Key Points
1. Thrift
Thrift is the careful management of money and resources to avoid waste. It is not about being stingy, but about being resourceful.
- Core Idea: Using what you have efficiently.
- Examples: Turning off lights when leaving a room, mending old clothes instead of buying new ones, and finishing your food to avoid waste.
- Importance: It reduces unnecessary expenses and preserves resources for the future.
2. Saving
Saving is the act of setting aside a portion of current income or resources for future use.
- Core Idea: Delaying immediate spending to meet future needs.
- Methods: Using a piggy bank (Kolo), opening a bank savings account, or participating in traditional "Ajo" or "Esusu" groups.
- Importance: It provides a safety net for emergencies and helps in achieving long-term goals like buying a house or paying for higher education.
3. Investment
Investment involves putting saved money into a business, asset, or scheme with the expectation of making a profit or increasing wealth.
- Core Idea: Making your money work for you.
- Examples: Buying shares in a company, purchasing land, or buying tools (like a sewing machine) to start a service.
- Difference from Saving: While saving keeps money safe, investment aims to grow the money, though it involves some level of risk.
4. Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship is the process of identifying a need or problem in society and starting a business to provide a solution.
- Core Idea: Innovation and risk-taking to create value.
- Characteristics of an Entrepreneur: Creative, determined, disciplined, and a calculated risk-taker.
- Importance: It creates jobs, introduces new products to the market, and boosts the Nigerian economy.
