MARKETING CONCEPTS: PRODUCTION, PRODUCT, SELLING, MARKETING, AND SOCIETAL CONCEPTS
(For S.S. 1 Students)
Core Concepts
Businesses operate with different ideas about how to succeed in the market. These ideas are called "marketing concepts." Understanding them helps us see how companies approach customers and products.
This concept assumes customers prefer products that are widely available and inexpensive. Businesses focus on making production very efficient and distributing products everywhere. The main goal is to produce a lot at a low cost.
Here, the belief is that customers favour products offering the most quality, performance, and innovative features. Companies concentrate on continuously improving their products, adding new features, and making them superior. They assume customers will automatically buy the best product.
This concept holds that customers will not buy enough of the company's products unless the company undertakes aggressive selling and promotion efforts. It focuses on making sales transactions rather than building long-term customer relationships. The aim is to sell what the company makes, not necessarily what the market wants.
This is a customer-centred philosophy. It states that achieving organisational goals depends on knowing the needs and wants of target markets and delivering the desired satisfactions more effectively and efficiently than competitors. It starts with the customer and works backwards.
This concept questions whether the pure marketing concept overlooks possible conflicts between consumer short-run wants and consumer long-run welfare. It suggests that a company's marketing decisions should consider consumers' wants, the company's requirements, and society's long-run interests.
Key Points
The Production and Product concepts focus internally on the company's capabilities or product features.
The Selling concept focuses on aggressive promotion to push products onto customers.
The Marketing concept shifts focus externally, prioritising understanding and satisfying customer needs and wants.
The Societal Marketing concept expands on the Marketing concept by adding a layer of social and environmental responsibility.
Modern businesses increasingly adopt the Marketing and Societal Marketing concepts for sustainable success.
Summary
Marketing concepts are different philosophies guiding how businesses operate. They range from focusing on efficient production (Production), product quality (Product), aggressive sales (Selling), to understanding customer needs (Marketing), and finally, considering both customer and societal well-being (Societal Marketing). The most successful companies today often align with the Marketing and Societal Marketing concepts.
