CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS STUDIES (CRS)
CLASS: SS 1
TOPIC: Jesus as the Lamb, the Door, and the Good Shepherd II: Further teachings and applications of Jesus as Lamb, Door, Shepherd
Core Concepts
In our previous lesson, we introduced Jesus using three powerful images: the Lamb, the Door, and the Good Shepherd. These images help us understand His identity, mission, and relationship with humanity. In this lesson, we will explore the deeper teachings and practical applications of these roles, understanding how they impact our lives as believers today. We will see how Jesus's work as the Lamb brings salvation, His role as the Door grants access to God, and His nature as the Good Shepherd provides constant care and guidance.
Key Points
1. Jesus as the Lamb of God: Further Teachings and Applications
- Further Teaching: Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice for sin. Just as a lamb was sacrificed in the Old Testament for atonement (e.g., the Passover lamb), Jesus, being sinless, willingly offered His life on the cross. His blood cleanses us from all sin, making us pure before God. He fulfilled all prophecies about a suffering servant who would take away the sins of the world (Isaiah 53).
- Applications:
- Forgiveness and Salvation: Through Jesus's sacrifice as the Lamb, we receive forgiveness for our sins and the gift of eternal life when we believe in Him.
- Freedom from Sin's Power: His death broke the power of sin over our lives, allowing us to live righteously.
- Holy Living: We are called to live a pure and holy life, honouring His sacrifice and striving to avoid sin.
- Remembrance: Participating in Holy Communion (Eucharist) helps us remember and appreciate His sacrificial love.
2. Jesus as the Door: Further Teachings and Applications
- Further Teaching: Jesus declared, "I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved" (John 10:9). This means He is the only way to God, to salvation, and to eternal life. There is no other path, method, or religion that can grant true access to God's presence or His heavenly kingdom. He provides safe entry into God's spiritual "pastures" and protection from spiritual dangers.
- Applications:
- Exclusive Path to God: We must accept Jesus as the only way to have a relationship with God and receive salvation.
- Security and Protection: Entering through Jesus provides spiritual safety and protection from the destructive forces of sin and evil.
- Access to Blessings: Through Him, we gain access to God's grace, peace, guidance, and all spiritual blessings.
- Entry into God's Family: By entering through Jesus, we become children of God and members of His divine family.
3. Jesus as the Good Shepherd: Further Teachings and Applications
- Further Teaching: Jesus identified Himself as the "Good Shepherd" who lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:11). Unlike a hired hand who runs away when danger comes, Jesus deeply loves and protects His flock. He knows each of His sheep by name, leads them to green pastures (spiritual nourishment), and defends them from wolves (spiritual enemies). He also gathers all His sheep into one flock.
- Applications:
- Guidance and Direction: We are to listen to Jesus's voice (through the Bible, prayer, and the Holy Spirit) for wisdom and direction in our lives. He leads us to truth and purpose.
- Protection and Security: We trust Jesus to protect us from spiritual attacks, temptations, and the dangers of the world. He offers comfort and safety.
- Provision and Care: Jesus provides for our spiritual and sometimes physical needs. He ensures we have what we need to thrive.
- Unity and Community: As His sheep, we are part of one flock, encouraging us to live in unity and love with other believers.
- Inspiration for Love: His sacrificial love as the Shepherd inspires us to care for and serve others, especially those in need.
Summary
Jesus's roles as the Lamb, the Door, and the Good Shepherd are fundamental to understanding His divine mission and our salvation. As the Lamb, He sacrificed Himself to take away our sins, offering us forgiveness and eternal life. As the Door, He provides the exclusive and secure path to God and all His blessings. As the Good Shepherd, He lovingly guides, protects, and provides for us, demonstrating His deep personal care. These teachings call us to respond with faith, obedience, and a commitment to live according to His will, trusting fully in His complete work for us.
