Introduction to Modelling II: Types and Properties of Clay
Subject: Visual Arts
Class: SS 1
Curriculum: Nigeria
Modelling is the process of creating three-dimensional forms using malleable materials. In Visual Arts, clay is the most common material used due to its unique physical characteristics. Understanding the types and properties of clay is essential for any sculptor or ceramicist to achieve desired results.

Key Points
1. Types of Clay
Clay is categorized based on its origin and how it was deposited by nature.
- Primary Clay (Residual Clay): This is clay found at the site where it was formed from weathered rocks.
- It is pure, white in color, and free from organic impurities.
- It has large particles and low plasticity.
- Example: Kaolin (China Clay).
- Secondary Clay (Sedimentary Clay): This clay has been transported from its original site by water, wind, or ice.
- It picks up minerals and organic matter during travel, making it darker (grey, red, or brown).
- It has finer particles and is much more plastic (easier to mold) than primary clay.
- Example: Ball clay, Fire clay.
2. Properties of Clay
To be suitable for modelling, clay must possess specific physical qualities:
- Plasticity: This is the most important property. It is the ability of clay to be molded into different shapes without cracking and to retain that shape once the pressure is removed.
- Pliability: This refers to the flexibility of the clay. Pliable clay is soft and easy to manipulate with hands or tools without being too sticky or too dry.
- Porosity: This is the ability of the clay to allow water to escape or be absorbed. Proper porosity ensures that the clay dries evenly and does not explode during the firing process in a kiln.

Brief Summary
Clay is classified into Primary clay (pure, found at the source) and Secondary clay (mixed with impurities, highly workable). For successful modelling, the clay must be plastic (moldable), pliable (flexible), and have the right level of porosity (ability to breathe/dry) to ensure the final artwork is durable and stable.
