CHEMISTRY: Acid-Base Titration

Welcome, SS2 students! Today, we're exploring Acid-Base Titration, a fundamental quantitative analytical method in chemistry. Titration helps us determine the unknown concentration of an acid or a base using a solution of known concentration.

Core Concepts

What is Titration?

Titration is a laboratory technique used to determine the concentration of a reactant (analyte) by reacting it with a solution of another reactant (titrant) of known concentration. In acid-base titration, an acid reacts with a base to achieve neutralization.

1. Titration Apparatus

Performing a titration requires specific laboratory equipment:

Burette: A long, graduated glass tube with a stopcock at the bottom. It's used to deliver variable, precise volumes of the titrant.
Pipette: A glass tube designed to measure and transfer a fixed, accurate volume of the analyte.
Conical Flask (Erlenmeyer Flask): Used to hold the analyte and indicator, allowing for easy swirling during the titration.
Retort Stand and Clamp: Used to hold the burette vertically.
Funnel: Used to safely fill the burette with the titrant.
White Tile: Placed under the conical flask to make the indicator's color change more visible.

2. Titration Procedure

Here are the general steps for conducting an acid-base titration:

Preparation: Wash and rinse all glassware (burette, pipette, conical flask) with distilled water, then rinse the burette with the titrant and the pipette with the analyte.
Pipetting: Using the pipette, accurately measure a known volume (e.g., 20.0 cm³ or 25.0 cm³) of the analyte (solution of unknown concentration) into the clean conical flask.
Indicator Addition: Add 2-3 drops of a suitable acid-base indicator to the analyte in the conical flask.
Burette Filling: Fill the burette with the titrant (solution of known concentration) using a funnel. Ensure the burette tip is free of air bubbles and record the initial burette reading.
Titration: Slowly add the titrant from the burette into the conical flask, swirling the flask continuously. Observe the color change of the indicator.
Endpoint: Continue adding the titrant drop by drop, especially as you approach the expected color change. The point at which the indicator just changes color permanently is called the endpoint. This is a visual approximation of the equivalence point (when the acid and base have completely neutralized each other).
Reading: Record the final burette reading. The volume of titrant used is the difference between the initial and final readings.
Repetition: Repeat the titration several times to obtain concordant results (readings that are very close to each other, typically within 0.1 cm³). This ensures accuracy.

3. Acid-Base Indicators

Acid-base indicators are weak organic acids or bases that change color over a specific pH range. They are crucial for signaling the endpoint of a titration.

How they work: The indicator's color depends on the pH of the solution. When the acid and base in the titration have just neutralized each other, the pH changes sharply, causing the indicator to change color.
Choosing an indicator: The choice of indicator depends on the strength of the acid and base being titrated:
- Strong acid vs. Strong base: Methyl orange or Phenolphthalein.
- Strong acid vs. Weak base: Methyl orange (changes from red to yellow).
- Weak acid vs. Strong base: Phenolphthalein (changes from colorless to pink).
- Weak acid vs. Weak base: No suitable indicator.
Examples:
- Methyl Orange: Red in acidic solution, yellow in basic solution, orange at the endpoint.
- Phenolphthalein: Colorless in acidic solution, pink in basic solution.

4. Titration Calculations

Once you have the volumes from your titration, you can calculate the unknown concentration using the mole concept and the stoichiometry of the reaction.

The general formula derived from the mole ratio is: $\frac{C_A V_A}{n_A} = \frac{C_B V_B}{n_B}$

Where:

$C_A$ = Concentration of acid
$V_A$ = Volume of acid
$n_A$ = Mole ratio of acid from the balanced equation
$C_B$ = Concentration of base
$V_B$ = Volume of base
$n_B$ = Mole ratio of base from the balanced equation

Steps for Calculation:

Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction to determine the mole ratio ( $n_A$ $n_{A}$ and $n_B$ $n_{B}$ ).
- Example: $HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) \rightarrow NaCl(aq) + H_2O(l)$ $H Cl (a q) + N a O H (a q) \to N a Cl (a q) + H_{2} O (l)$
  - Here, $n_A = 1$ (for HCl) and $n_B = 1$ (for NaOH).
List all known values ( $C_A$ , $V_A$ , $C_B$ , $V_B$ , $n_A$ , $n_B$ ).
Substitute the values into the formula.
Solve for the unknown concentration. Remember to ensure all volumes are in the same unit (e.g., dm³ or cm³). If volumes are in cm³, the concentration will be in mol/dm³.

Real-World Example

Titration is widely used in various industries. For instance, in the food industry, it's used to determine the acidity of vinegar, fruit juices, and dairy products, ensuring quality control and safety. This helps maintain consistent taste and prevents spoilage.

Practice/Reflection Question

You performed a titration where 25.0 cm³ of an unknown concentration of hydrochloric acid (HCl) was neutralized by 20.0 cm³ of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction.
Calculate the concentration of the hydrochloric acid.
