Processes of Choreography
Introduction
Choreography is the art of designing, arranging, and coordinating sequences of movements to create a dance. A choreographer is the creative professional who conceptualizes the dance, selects the music, and directs the dancers to bring a vision to life. In JSS 3, understanding these processes helps students appreciate dance as a structured form of communication rather than just random movement.

Processes Employed by a Choreographer
To create a successful dance piece, a choreographer typically follows these essential steps:
- Stimulus (Inspiration): This is the starting point. It could be a piece of music, a story, a social issue, an emotion, or even a picture.
- Exploration (Improvisation): The choreographer tries out different movements spontaneously to see what fits the theme. Dancers may be asked to move freely to discover new patterns.
- Selection and Refinement: Out of the many movements explored, the choreographer selects the most effective ones and discards those that do not fit the message.
- Composition (Structure): The selected movements are organized into a sequence with a clear Beginning, Middle, and End.
- Rehearsal: The dancers practice the arranged movements repeatedly to ensure precision, timing, and expression.
Creating a Dance Pattern
A dance pattern refers to the arrangement of movements in space. Creating these patterns involves:
- Floor Patterns: These are the paths dancers take on the stage. They can be linear (straight lines), circular, zigzag, or diagonal.
- Levels: Using different heights, such as low (crawling/kneeling), medium (standing), and high (leaping/jumping).
- Formations: Organizing how dancers stand in relation to each other (e.g., V-shape, T-shape, or clusters).
- Rhythm and Timing: Ensuring movements match the beats of the music or the intended mood.
- Dynamics: Varying the energy of the movement—switching between soft, graceful motions and sharp, powerful ones.

Brief Summary
Choreography is a deliberate creative process that transforms an idea into a structured dance. It involves finding inspiration, exploring movements, and refining them into a cohesive piece. By manipulating floor patterns, levels, and formations, a choreographer creates a visual "map" that tells a story or expresses an emotion through the human body.
