GOLDEN STARS MONTESSORI ACADEMYIndustrial chemistry is a branch of chemistry that applies chemical principles and processes to convert raw materials into useful products on a large scale. In Nigeria, several chemical industries play a vital role in the economy, providing essential goods, employment, and contributing to national development. These industries utilize various chemical reactions and engineering processes to transform natural resources into everyday items.
The petroleum industry is Nigeria's largest industrial sector, focusing on the exploration, extraction, refining, and marketing of crude oil and natural gas. Crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons.
Chemical Process: Fractional distillation is the primary process used to separate crude oil into different fractions (products) based on their boiling points.
Products: Petrol (gasoline), diesel, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), bitumen, and raw materials for petrochemicals.

Cement is a binding material that hardens when mixed with water, forming a strong, durable substance. It is crucial for construction. Raw Materials: Limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) and clay (aluminium silicates). Chemical Process: Raw materials are crushed, mixed, and heated in a rotary kiln at very high temperatures (around 1450°C) to form clinker. Gypsum is then added to the clinker and ground into a fine powder to produce cement. The main chemical reaction during heating is the decomposition of limestone to calcium oxide (CaO) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). Product: Portland cement.
Soap is a cleaning agent made from fats or oils and an alkali.
Raw Materials: Animal fats or vegetable oils (e.g., palm oil, coconut oil) and strong alkalis (e.g., sodium hydroxide for hard soap, potassium hydroxide for soft soap).
Chemical Process: Saponification – the hydrolysis of fats/oils by an alkali to produce soap (a salt of fatty acid) and glycerol.
Fat/Oil + Alkali → Soap + Glycerol
Products: Bar soaps, liquid soaps, detergents.

Paints are coatings applied to surfaces for protection, decoration, or both. Components:
The textile industry involves the production of fabrics from various fibres, including dyeing and finishing. Raw Materials: Natural fibres (e.g., cotton from plants, wool from animals) and synthetic fibres (e.g., nylon, polyester, which are polymers produced chemically). Chemical Processes:
This industry produces drinks for human consumption, including soft drinks, fruit juices, and alcoholic beverages. Raw Materials: Water, sugar, flavourings, fruits, grains (for alcoholic drinks), and various chemical additives. Chemical Processes:
Consider the cement industry: the production of cement directly impacts every Nigerian by providing the fundamental material for constructing houses, schools, hospitals, and roads. Without this industry, our infrastructure development would be severely hampered, making daily life much more difficult.
Think about your daily routine. List three different products you use or encounter that are directly manufactured by any of the chemical industries discussed above. Briefly explain how each product benefits you.
