JSS 1 CLASS NOTE
TOPIC: The Creation of Man and Woman (Genesis 2:4–24)
Core Concepts
This passage from Genesis describes God's unique creation of the first man, Adam, and the first woman, Eve. It explains how God prepared the earth for human life, gave man responsibility, and then created woman as a suitable helper. It also lays the foundation for the institution of marriage.
Key Points
God Prepares the Earth: Before creating man, God made the earth and heavens. The land was dry, and there were no plants because there was no rain and no one to cultivate the ground.
Creation of Man: The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground. He then breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and man became a living being. This first man was named Adam.
The Garden of Eden: God planted a beautiful garden in a place called Eden, in the east. He placed Adam there to work it and take care of it. The garden had many trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food.
The Special Trees: In the middle of the garden were two important trees: the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
God's Commandment to Adam: God told Adam he was free to eat from any tree in the garden, except for the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God warned that if Adam ate from it, he would surely die.
Man's Loneliness: God observed that it was not good for Adam to be alone. He decided to make a suitable helper for him.
Naming the Animals: God brought all the wild animals and birds to Adam for him to name them. Adam named all the creatures, but he did not find a helper who was suitable for him among them.
Creation of Woman: The Lord God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. While Adam was sleeping, God took one of his ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. From the rib, God formed a woman.
Adam's Joy and Recognition: When Adam woke up and saw the woman, he was filled with joy. He exclaimed, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man."
The Institution of Marriage: This event teaches us about marriage. It states that because of this, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.
Innocence: Both Adam and his wife were naked, but they felt no shame. This shows their innocence and purity before sin entered the world.
Summary
Genesis 2:4-24 tells us that God first created Adam from dust and gave him life and the responsibility to tend the Garden of Eden. Realizing Adam was alone, God created all animals for him to name, but none was a suitable companion. So, God put Adam into a deep sleep, took a rib from him, and formed the first woman, Eve. This established the union between man and woman, leading to the sacred institution of marriage.
