GOLDEN STARS MONTESSORI ACADEMYHello, JSS 1 students! Today, we're going to learn about the "brain" of a computer – software. Just like your body needs your brain to think and tell it what to do, a computer needs software to work.
Software is a set of instructions or programs that tell a computer what to do. Without software, a computer is just a useless machine (hardware). It's like a recipe that tells a chef how to cook a meal; the software tells the computer how to perform tasks.
This image shows different layers of software, from the operating system to applications.
There are two main types of software:
System Software: This type of software helps to manage and control the computer's hardware and allows other software to run. It makes the computer itself work properly. Think of it as the manager of the computer system.
Common operating systems like Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Functions of an Operating System: The operating system performs many important jobs:
Application Software: This type of software is designed for users to perform specific tasks or activities. It helps you to do your work or have fun. Application software cannot run without system software (especially an operating system).
Examples of Application Software:
Icons for common application software like a web browser, word processor, and music player.
Think about your smartphone. The phone itself is hardware. The Android or iOS operating system is the system software that makes the phone work. Apps like WhatsApp, YouTube, or your camera are all application software that you use to do specific things.
Look at a computer or smartphone around you. Can you identify its operating system? Name two application software programs you use most often on it.
