Part 1: Grammar Revision (Parts of Speech)
Grammar is the "engine" of the English language. Let’s polish our understanding of the four basic building blocks.
1. Nouns (The Naming Words)
A noun is a word used to name a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.
- Types of Nouns:
- Proper Nouns: Specific names (always capitalized). Example: Lagos, Tunde, Monday, Nigeria.
- Common Nouns: General names. Example: boy, city, table, dog.
- Abstract Nouns: Things you cannot touch (feelings/ideas). Example: Honesty, bravery, love.
- Collective Nouns: Names for groups. Example: A flock of birds, a class of students.
Illustration: The Noun Tree
Imagine a tree where the trunk is the "Noun." The branches are People (Teacher), Places (Abuja), Things (Phone), and Ideas (Freedom).
2. Pronouns (The Substitutes)
A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun to avoid boring repetition.
- Example: Instead of saying "Amaka is a girl. Amaka is tall. Amaka likes rice," we say "Amaka is a girl. She is tall and she likes rice."
- Common Pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us, them.
- Possessive Pronouns: Mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs.
3. Verbs (The Action/State Words)
A verb tells us what the subject is doing or the state it is in. Without a verb, there is no sentence!
- Action Verbs: Jump, write, dance, think, eat.
- State of Being (Auxiliary) Verbs: Is, am, are, was, were, has, have.
- Example: The students are (state) in the hall and they are singing (action).
4. Adjectives (The Describers)
An adjective gives more information about a noun or pronoun. It answers: What kind? Which one? How many?
- Examples:
- The beautiful (what kind) girl.
- Two (how many) mangoes.
- That expensive (which one) car.
| Noun | Adjective | Sentence |
|---|
| Student | Diligent | The diligent student passed the exam. |
| Soup | Spicy | I enjoyed the spicy Egusi soup. |
| House | Big | They live in a big house. |
Part 2: Vocabulary & Spelling Drills
Spelling is vital for clear communication. In JSS 1, we often make mistakes with "silent letters" or "double consonants."
Common Spelling Pitfalls
