Contrasting /eɪ/ and /aɪ/
- /eɪ/ (The "A" sound): As in "Gate" or "Day."
- /aɪ/ (The "I" sound): As in "Kite" or "My."
| /eɪ/ (as in Play) | /aɪ/ (as in Fly) |

| Bake /beɪk/ | Bike /baɪk/ |
| Fate /feɪt/ | Fight /faɪt/ |
| Late /leɪt/ | Light /laɪt/ |
| Main /meɪn/ | Mine /maɪn/ |
Contrasting /əʊ/ and /aʊ/
- /əʊ/ (The "O" sound): As in "Go" or "Boat."
- /aʊ/ (The "Ow" sound): As in "Now" or "House."
| /əʊ/ (as in No) | /aʊ/ (as in Now) |

| Boat /bəʊt/ | Bout /baʊt/ |
| Know /nəʊ/ | Now /naʊ/ |
| Road /rəʊd/ | Roused /raʊzd/ |
| Tone /təʊn/ | Town /taʊn/ |
