Topic: Human Trafficking and Migration
Have you ever traveled to another city to visit your grandparents or moved to a new neighborhood? Moving from one place to another is a normal part of life. However, there is a big difference between traveling safely by choice and being forced or tricked into moving. Today, we will look at the difference between Migration and Human Trafficking.
Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings. It happens when people are taken away from their homes using force, threats, or lies, to be used for hard work or other bad purposes.
People who commit this crime are called traffickers. In Nigeria, traffickers often target children and young people. They might trick parents by promising to send their children to good schools in big cities like Lagos, Abuja, or even abroad. Instead of school, these children are forced to work as house helps (maids), sell goods on dangerous streets (hawking), or work in farms and factories without pay. This is a serious crime and a violation of human rights.
Migration is the movement of people from one place to another to live, work, or study. Migration can happen within a country (like moving from a village to a city) or between different countries (like traveling from Nigeria to Canada).
The most important thing to know about migration is that it is voluntary (done by choice) and legal. People migrate because they want to find better jobs, get a good education, or be close to their families.
| Feature | Migration | Human Trafficking |
|---|---|---|
| Choice | The person chooses to move freely. | The person is forced, kidnapped, or tricked. |
| Freedom | The person keeps their freedom and can go back home. | The person loses their freedom and cannot leave. |
| Purpose | To get a better job, study, or live peacefully. | To be abused, overworked, or exploited for money. |
| Legality | It is legal and follows government rules (using passports/visas). | It is illegal, secretive, and a major crime. |
Traffickers can be very tricky. They often pretend to be kind family friends or uncles. To stay safe, we must:

B. Short Answer Questions: 4. State two major differences between migration and human trafficking. 5. Mention two ways you can protect yourself from traffickers.
