TOPIC: MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY ON OUR ROADS – ROAD SIGNS AND MEANING
CLASS NOTE
Introduction to Road Maintenance and Safety
Roads are built to connect towns, villages, and cities, allowing people and goods to move easily. To keep our roads durable, they must be maintained. Road maintenance includes repairing potholes, clearing roadside bushes, and fixing broken streetlights.
However, good roads are not enough to prevent accidents. We must also practice road safety. Road safety refers to the rules, habits, and behaviors that keep drivers, passengers, and pedestrians safe from accidents.
What are Road Signs?
Road signs are symbols, pictures, or words placed by the roadside to guide, warn, and direct road users. In Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is the government agency responsible for making sure road users obey these signs and traffic laws to keep everyone safe.
Categories of Road Signs
To make them easy to understand, road signs are divided into three main groups based on their shapes and purposes:
1. Regulatory Signs (Command Signs)
These signs give instructions or orders that road users must obey. Breaking these rules is against the law and can lead to arrests or accidents. They are usually circular.
- The STOP Sign: An eight-sided (octagon) red sign with "STOP" written in white. It tells drivers to bring their vehicles to a complete stop before moving on.
- No Entry: A red circle with a white horizontal bar in the middle. It means vehicles are not allowed to enter that street.
- Speed Limit: A white circle with a red border showing a number (e.g., 50). It tells drivers the maximum speed they are allowed to drive.
2. Warning Signs (Danger Signs)
These signs alert drivers to potential dangers or changes on the road ahead so they can slow down and drive carefully. They are usually triangular with red borders.
- Zebra Crossing Ahead: Shows a person walking across black and white stripes. It warns drivers to slow down because pedestrians may be crossing.
- School Crossing: Shows two children walking. It warns drivers to slow down because there is a school nearby.
- T-Junction Ahead: Warns the driver that the road ends at a junction shaping like the letter 'T'.
3. Informative Signs (Information Signs)
These signs give helpful information about directions, distances, and nearby places like hospitals, gas stations, or resting points. They are usually rectangular or square and are mostly blue or green.
- Hospital Sign: A blue square with a white letter "H".
- Pedestrian Bridge: Points to a nearby overhead bridge where pedestrians can safely cross high-speed highways.
Important Road Safety Rules for Pedestrians
As students, you are pedestrians. To stay safe on the road, you must:
- Use the Pedestrian Walkway (Sidewalk): Always walk on the side of the road facing traffic if there is no sidewalk.
- Obey Traffic Lights:
- RED means STOP.
- YELLOW/AMBER means GET READY.
- GREEN means GO.
- Use Safe Crossing Points: Always cross the road using a Zebra crossing, a pedestrian bridge, or where a traffic warden is present.
- Avoid Play: Never play, run, or use mobile phones while walking on or near the road.
SUMMARY
- Road maintenance keeps roads in good condition, while road safety prevents accidents.
- The FRSC is the agency in charge of road safety in Nigeria.
- Road signs are divided into three types: Regulatory (Circles - orders to obey), Warning (Triangles - hazards ahead), and Informative (Rectangles - direction and help).
- Obeying traffic lights and using pedestrian crossings saves lives.
