BASIC SCIENCE NOTE: MINERAL RESOURCES
Class: Grade 5
Term: First Term
Topic: Mineral Resources (Types, Characteristics, and Importance)
Have you ever wondered where the gold in jewelry, the cement for houses, or the petrol for cars comes from? They all come from deep inside the earth!
Mineral resources are natural substances found under the ground that are useful to humans. Nigeria is a very rich country because our soil contains many valuable mineral resources that help us live comfortable lives and grow our economy.
Types of Mineral Resources
Mineral resources are grouped into three main categories based on what they are made of and how we use them:
-
Metallic Minerals: These are hard, shiny minerals that can conduct heat and electricity. Examples include:
- Gold (found in Zamfara and Osun States)
- Iron Ore (found in Kogi State)
- Tin and Columbite (found in Plateau State)
-
Non-Metallic Minerals: These are minerals that are not shiny, cannot be melted to make new shapes, and do not conduct electricity. Examples include:
- Limestone (found in Ogun, Benue, and Cross River States)
- Clay (found in almost all states)
- Salt (found in Ebonyi State)
-
Mineral Fuels (Energy Minerals): These are minerals that we burn to produce power and energy. Examples include:
- Crude Oil / Petroleum (found in the Niger Delta region, like Rivers and Delta States)
- Coal (found in Enugu State)
- Natural Gas (found alongside crude oil)
Physical Characteristics of Some Key Minerals
We can identify minerals by looking at their physical appearances and properties:
- Gold: It is bright yellow, very shiny, heavy, and does not rust.
- Coal: It is a black or dark-brown, hard rock that burns easily to produce heat.
- Limestone: It is a white or greyish rock. It is dusty and feels chalky to the touch.
- Crude Oil: It is a thick, dark, oily liquid with a very strong smell.
- Iron Ore: It is a heavy, dark-grey or reddish-brown rock that is very strong.
Importance and Uses of Mineral Resources
Mineral resources are extremely important to our daily lives and the growth of Nigeria.
- Source of Power and Energy: Crude oil is refined into petrol, diesel, and kerosene to power our cars, generators, airplanes, and kitchen stoves. Coal is also burned to generate electricity.
- Construction of Buildings and Roads: Limestone is the main raw material used to make cement. Iron ore is used to make strong steel rods and roofing sheets for building houses and bridges.
- Source of Wealth and Income: Selling crude oil to other countries brings in the majority of the money (revenue) that the Nigerian government uses to build schools, roads, and hospitals.
- Job Creation: Mining and oil drilling provide jobs for thousands of engineers, miners, and drivers.
- Making Everyday Items: Gold is used to make beautiful jewelry. Clay is used to make ceramic plates, toilet bowls, and bricks.
Summary
- Mineral resources are valuable materials found inside the earth.
- The three types of minerals are Metallic (e.g., Gold, Iron ore), Non-Metallic (e.g., Limestone, Clay), and Mineral Fuels (e.g., Crude oil, Coal).
- Minerals have different physical characteristics, such as gold being shiny yellow and coal being black.
- Minerals are important for energy, building construction, making jewelry, and bringing money to Nigeria.
