GENERATIONS OF COMPUTER
FIRST GENERATION (1940-1956):
Technology: Vacuum tubes (Large glass tubes)
Characteristics
1. Very large (filled entire room)
2. Very heavy
3. Generated much heat
4. Used lots of electricity
5. Expensive
Example: ENIAC (1946)-weighed 30 tons!
SECOND GENERATION COMPUTER
Technology: Transistors (small devices that replaced vacuum tube)
Characteristics
1. smaller than first generation
2. less heat
3. more reliable
4. less expensive
THIRD GENERATION
Technology: Integrated circuits (ICs)- many transistors in one chip
Characterstics
1. much smaller
2. faster
3. more reliable
4. keyboard and monitor introduced
5. operating system developed
Example: IBM360 series
FOURTH GENERATION (1971-PRESENT)
Technology: Microprocessor(entire CPU in one chip)
Characteristics
1. very small (personal computers possible)
2. very fast
3. affordable
4. personal computers for homes and offces
5. Graphical User Interface (GUIs)- icons and mouse
Examples: Apple II(1977), IBM PC (1981), Modern laptops and smart phones
FIFTH GENERATION(PRESENT-FUTURE)
Technology: AI and advanced computing
characteristics
1. voice recognition (Siri, Alexa)
2. Machine learning
3. Robotics
4. Quantum computing(developing)
Examples: smartphones with AI, self driving cars (developing), smart assistants.
EVOLUTION FROM ANALOG TO DIGITAL
Analog era
