Subject: Information Technology (IT)

Term: Third Term

Week: 6

Topic: FILE SHARING

Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

Discuss networks.

1. Introduction to Computer Networks

To understand file sharing, we must first discuss networks. A computer network is a group of two or more interconnected computer systems or devices that are linked together to share resources, exchange files, and communicate.

Common Types of Networks:

PAN (Personal Area Network): A very small network used for connecting devices near a single person (e.g., connecting a smartphone to wireless headphones via Bluetooth).
LAN (Local Area Network): A network confined to a relatively small area, such as a school computer lab, an office building, or a home.
MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): A network that covers a larger geographic area, like a city or a large university campus.
WAN (Wide Area Network): The largest type of network that covers vast geographical distances. The Internet is the most well-known example of a WAN.

2. What is File Sharing?

File Sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digital media, such as computer programs, documents, audio, images, and video files. Because computers are connected via networks, users can easily send or receive files from one device to another without needing to physically move a hard drive or print out paper.

3. Common Methods of File Sharing

Different networks allow for different methods of sharing files. Differentiating between these methods helps users choose the best one for their needs:

Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Direct (PAN/LAN): Used for sharing files over very short distances between mobile phones, tablets, or laptops wirelessly.
Removable Storage (Offline): Using a USB Flash Drive or External Hard Drive to physically copy a file from one computer and paste it onto another.
Email Attachments (WAN): Sending a digital file as an attachment alongside an email message over the internet.
Cloud Storage (WAN): Uploading files to internet-based storage services (like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive) where they can be downloaded or accessed by anyone given permission.
Network Shares (LAN): Setting up a shared folder on a school or office network so that any connected computer in the building can access the files inside it.

4. Benefits of File Sharing over a Network

Speed and Efficiency: Files can be sent across the world in seconds.
Cost Savings: Reduces the need to buy physical storage devices (like CDs or flash drives) or print paper documents.
Collaboration: Multiple people can access, view, and even edit the same digital file simultaneously.
