1. Definition of Examination Malpractice
- Examination: An organized test or assessment used to measure a student’s knowledge, skills, and understanding of a subject.
- Examination Malpractice: Any illegal or irregular behavior by a student, teacher, or external agent before, during, or after an examination to gain an unfair advantage. [
2. Common Forms of Examination Malpractices
Students and perpetrators bypass school rules through several illegal means:
- Bring-in / Giraffing: Smuggling illegal foreign materials into the exam hall (e.g., micro-text, textbooks, written notes on body parts) or stretching necks to copy from neighbors.
- Impersonation: Hiring or getting someone else to sit for the examination on behalf of the registered candidate.
- Collusion: Illegal cooperation between two or more candidates, or between candidates and supervisors, to exchange answers during the test.
- Leakage: Selling, buying, or distributing exam questions before the official exam date and time.
- Electronic Cheating: Using unauthorized digital devices like smartphones, smartwatches, or mini-calculators to store or access answers in the exam room.
3. Causes of Examination Malpractices
Malpractice stems from various individual and systemic flaws:
- Laziness and Poor Study Habits: A general lack of reading and preparation by students.
- Fear of Failure: Intense pressure to pass at all costs due to parental or societal expectations.
- Inadequate School Facilities: Lack of standard textbooks, science laboratories, or qualified teachers to cover the Lagos State syllabus effectively.
- Corrupt Examiners/Invigilators: Dishonest staff who accept bribes or financial inducements from parents or miracle centers to allow cheating.
4. Consequences of Examination Malpractices
Engaging in exam fraud damages both the student and the society:
- Cancellation of Results: Examination bodies (like WAEC, NECO, or school boards) can completely seize or cancel the results of offenders.
- Rustication or Expulsion: Students caught in the act face immediate suspension or dismissal from school.
- Devaluation of Certificates: Employers lose trust in certificates issued by Nigerian institutions, reducing job opportunities for graduates.
- Imprisonment: According to the Examination Malpractices Act No. 33 of 1999, offenders can face heavy fines or jail terms ranging from 3 to 5 years.
5. Ways to Curb Examination Malpractices
Preventing exam fraud requires combined efforts from students, schools, and government:
Individual / Student Level
- Hard Work: Developing a consistent reading timetable to finish the syllabus on time.
- Contentment and Integrity: Believing in one's personal ability and embracing the core national values of honesty.
Institutional / School Level
- Stiff Punishments: Demoting, suspending, or blacklisting any student, teacher, or school caught aiding malpractice.
- Proper Sitting Arrangements: Ensuring spaces between desks are wide enough during examinations to block "giraffing."
- Use of ICT: Implementing computer-based testing (CBT) and installing CCTV cameras inside exam centers to closely monitor activities.
Societal / Government Level
- Improved Infrastructure: Government funding to provide libraries, modern learning aids, and well-equipped classrooms.
- Teacher Empowerment: Training teachers properly, covering the syllabus strictly, and paying supervisors fair allowances to limit financial temptation.
- Parental Orientation: Sensitizing parents to stop buying live exam questions for children and encouraging them to reward honest effort.
