MATHEMATICS CLASS NOTES: UNDERSTANDING TIME
Level: Nursery Three (Age 5-6)
Theme: Measurement and Daily Living
1. COMPREHENSIVE CORE CONCEPTS
What is Time?
Time is how we measure the world moving forward. It tells us when things happen, how long they last, and when it is time to start something new. Imagine if we didn't have time—we wouldn't know when to wake up for school, when to eat lunch, or when to watch our favorite cartoons! We use clocks and calendars to help us keep track of time.
The Parts of the Day
Before we look at a clock, we must understand the four main parts of our day:
- Morning: This is when the sun rises. We wake up, brush our teeth, and have breakfast.
- Afternoon: The sun is high in the sky. This is usually when we are at school or eating lunch.
- Evening: The sun starts to go down. We come home, play, and have dinner with our family.
- Night: The moon and stars come out. It is dark outside, and it is time for our bodies to rest and sleep.
Meet the Clock Face
An Analog Clock is a round face that has numbers and "hands."
- The Numbers: There are 12 numbers on the clock, starting from 1 all the way to 12. They are arranged in a circle.
- The Short Hand (The Hour Hand): This is the "slow" hand. It points to the hour. If it points to 3, it is 3 o'clock.
- The Long Hand (The Minute Hand): This is the "fast" hand. For now, we are learning that when this long hand points straight up at the 12, it means the hour is exactly "O’Clock."
How to Read "O'Clock" (Step-by-Step)
Reading time is like being a detective. Follow these steps:
- Step 1: Look at the Short Hand first. What number is it pointing to? (Example: It is pointing at 4).
- Step 2: Look at the Long Hand. Is it pointing straight up at the 12?
- Step 3: If the long hand is at 12, say the number from the short hand and add the word "O'Clock."
- Result: It is 4 O'Clock!
2. REAL-WORLD EXAMPLES
Time is everywhere! Here are some ways we see time in our daily Nigerian life:
- School Assembly: Most schools start assembly at 8 O'Clock in the morning. When the short hand is on 8 and the long hand is on 12, it's time to sing the national anthem!
- Siesta/Nap Time: After a busy morning of learning, you might have a nap at 2 O'Clock in the afternoon.
- The Market Trip: If Mommy says, "We are going to the market at 10 O'Clock," you can look at the wall clock to see when it is time to put on your shoes.
- Bedtime: To grow strong and healthy, many children go to bed at 7 O'Clock or 8 O'Clock at night.
3. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: A GUIDE TO YOUR DAY
You can use time to organize your life. Here is a guide on how to apply time to your daily routine:
- The "Before and After" Rule: Time helps us sequence events.
- Example: We wash our hands before we eat. We brush our teeth after we wake up.
- Using a Timer for Tasks:
- Try to see how many toys you can pick up in 5 minutes.
- Time yourself while brushing your teeth to make sure you brush for a full 2 minutes!
