Welcome, JSS 1 students! Today, we will learn about Nouns, which are essential building blocks of the English language. Understanding nouns is key to forming clear sentences.
A noun is a word that names a person, animal, place, or thing. Simply put, it's a naming word. Everything you can see, touch, hear, smell, or think about has a name, and that name is a noun!
Let's look at examples for each category:
This picture shows many people. Each person is a noun. Can you think of other nouns that name people?
Nouns can be grouped into different types. For JSS 1, we will focus on two important types: Common Nouns and Proper Nouns.
A common noun is a general name for any person, animal, place, or thing. It does not refer to a specific one. Common nouns are usually not capitalized, unless they start a sentence.
Examples of Common Nouns:
If you say "boy," you could mean any boy. If you say "city," you could mean any city in the world.
A proper noun is a specific or particular name for a person, animal, place, or thing. Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter. This is a very important rule!
Examples of Proper Nouns:
Think of it this way: "boy" is a common noun, but "John" is a specific boy, so "John" is a proper noun. "City" is a common noun, but "Abuja" is a specific city, so "Abuja" is a proper noun.
This chart helps you see the difference. Notice how common nouns are general and start with a small letter (unless at the start of a sentence), while proper nouns are specific and always start with a capital letter.
Look around your home or classroom. Can you name five nouns you see? For example, your mother (person), dog (animal), kitchen (place), television (thing), and the book you are reading. Now, try to identify if each is a common or proper noun. For instance, "mother" is a common noun, but if her name is Mrs. Ade, then Mrs. Ade is a proper noun.
Write three simple sentences. In each sentence, underline all the nouns. Then, identify whether each underlined noun is a Common Noun or a Proper Noun. Example: The boy played with his ball. (boy - Common Noun, ball - Common Noun)
