BEST START INTERNATIONAL ACADEMYHere is a creative class note on "Horizontal addition of numbers and objects" for Kindergarten 2, designed to be clear, engaging, and easy to understand.
Hello, smart mathematicians! Today we are going to learn a super fun way to put things together called Horizontal Addition.
What is Addition? Addition is when we put things together! It's like collecting all your toys in one big pile and then counting how many you have in total. The 'plus' sign (+) means we are adding.
What is Horizontal? Think of a sleeping line, or how you write words in a sentence – side by side! That's horizontal. When we do horizontal addition, our numbers and objects are lined up next to each other, like this:
![]()
See how the circles are side-by-side? That's horizontal!
Adding Objects Horizontally Let's try adding objects first! Imagine you have some yummy apples.
You have 3 red apples and 2 green apples. To find out how many apples you have in all, we can add them horizontally:
🍎 🍎 🍎 + 🍏 🍏 = ?
Let's count them all together: One, two, three, four, five! So, 3 apples + 2 apples = 5 apples!
Adding Numbers Horizontally Now, let's look at numbers. Numbers are like symbols that stand for how many objects we have. When we add numbers horizontally, they sit next to each other like this:
2 + 3 = ?
To find the answer, you can use your fingers, count dots, or even imagine objects. If you have 2 fingers up, and then you put 3 more fingers up, how many fingers are up in all? Count them! One, two, three, four, five! So, 2 + 3 = 5.
Putting it Together: Numbers and Objects! Horizontal addition is super cool because you can use both numbers and objects at the same time! This helps you see what the numbers mean.
Look at this example:

Here, the number 2 is shown with 2 blue blocks, and the number 3 is shown with 3 red blocks. When you put them together horizontally, you get 5 blocks in total!
Let's try another one with fingers!

You see 4 fingers on one hand and 2 fingers on the other. If you count all the fingers, you get 6! So, 4 + 2 = 6. It's all lined up horizontally!
Imagine you have 3 toy cars parked in a line. Your friend brings 2 more toy cars and parks them next to yours. To find out how many cars are parked in total, you would count them all together! That's 3 cars + 2 cars = 5 cars.
Can you use your fingers or small toys to solve this: 1 star + 4 stars = ? What is the total number of stars you counted? You can also practice at home by adding how many spoons and forks are on the table for dinner!
