Basic Science Class Notes: Care for the Environment
Class: Primary 6
Topic: Care for the Environment
Core Concepts
What is "Care for the Environment"?
The environment is everything around us. This includes living things like plants and animals, and non-living things like air, water, and soil.
Caring for the environment means protecting, preserving, and keeping our surroundings clean and safe from harm. When we care for our environment, we make sure that human activities do not destroy the natural world.

4 Ways of Caring for the Environment
We can protect our surroundings by practicing these four habits daily:
- Waste Management (The 3 Rs):
- Reduce: Use less plastic and disposable items.
- Reuse: Find new uses for old items, like using an empty jam jar to store pencils.
- Recycle: Process waste materials like paper, plastic, and glass to make new products.

- Afforestation: This means planting new trees to replace the ones that have been cut down. Trees clean our air and provide homes for birds and insects.
- Proper Sanitation: Dispose of household rubbish in covered dustbins and keep local drainage systems (gutters) clear of dirt to prevent flooding and bad odors.
- Conserving Resources: Save water by turning off taps tightly when not in use, and save electricity by switching off lights when leaving a room.
4 Reasons Why Caring for the Environment is Important
Keeping our planet healthy is vital for our survival. Here is why:
- Prevents Diseases: Dirty surroundings breed pests like mosquitoes (which cause malaria) and rats (which spread Lassa fever). Clean surroundings keep these pests away.
- Protects Wildlife: Animals and plants need clean forests, oceans, and rivers to live. Preventing pollution keeps their habitats safe.
- Provides Clean Air and Water: Trees absorb harmful gases and release oxygen for us to breathe, while clean soil ensures our underground drinking water remains safe.

- Preserves Resources for the Future: Conserving soil, water, and forests today ensures that future generations will have enough food, water, and materials to survive.
Real-World Application & Practice
When communities leave plastic bottles in gutters, the drains block and cause severe flooding during heavy rains; clearing these drains keeps our streets dry and safe. For your home practice tonight, find one plastic container or cardboard box destined for the bin and turn it into something useful, like a stationery holder or a small planter.
Reflection & Practice Questions
- In your own words, define what it means to "care for the environment."
- Explain the difference between reusing an item and recycling it.
- Why does keeping our gutters free of rubbish help prevent diseases like malaria?
- Mention two things that could happen to our health if all the trees in our community were cut down.
