ARAT INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLMEANING AND TYPES OF EROSION
What is Erosion?
Think of soil as the Earth's thin, life-giving skin. It takes nature over 500 years to form just on inch of topsoil! Erosion is the process where this precious skin is worn away and transported by natural forces like water, wind, or ice.
Key Distinction: Weathering vs. Erosion
1. Weathering: The breaking down of rocks and minerals in place by weather (e.g., freeze thaw cycles, plant roots cracking rocks). It's the preparation stage.
2. Erosion: The picking up and moving of the weathered material. It's the transport stage.
Analogy: Imagine a brick wall (the rock). Weathering is the process of a loose brick crumbling into dust. Erosion is the wind or rain carrying that dust away.
TYPES OF EROSION
Erosion manifests in different forms, each with its own characteristics and severity.
1. WATER EROSION (The Most Common and Destructive in Nigeria) This occurs when
flowing water detaches and carries away soil particles.
2. WIND EROSION This occurs in dry, exposed areas where strong winds lift and carry away fine, dry soil particles.
