ANAMS GROUP OF SCHOOLSCLASS NOTE: THE PARTICULATE NATURE OF MATTER
Subject: Chemistry
Class: SSS 1
Topic: The Particulate Nature of Matter
1. What is Matter?
Matter is anything that has mass (how much 'stuff' is in it) and occupies space (has volume). It's all around us, from the air we breathe to the books we read.
2. The Particulate Nature of Matter
The "particulate nature of matter" means that all matter is made up of tiny, discrete particles. These particles (which can be atoms, molecules, or ions) are too small to be seen with the naked eye and are constantly in random motion.

3. Evidence for the Particulate Nature of Matter
We can observe phenomena that prove matter is made of tiny, moving particles:

4. The Kinetic Theory of Matter
This theory explains the properties of matter in terms of the motion of its particles:
5. States of Matter and Particle Arrangement
The arrangement and movement of particles determine the state of matter (solid, liquid, or gas).

When you boil water, you see steam rising (water in gaseous state). If you place a lid on the pot, water droplets form on its underside as the steam cools and condenses back into liquid water. This shows how water particles change their arrangement and movement with temperature.
Imagine you have a deflated football. When you pump air into it, it becomes firm and bouncy. Explain this observation using the concept of the particulate nature of matter and the kinetic theory.
